How to Protect Your Skin from Blue Light Damage

 In Beauty

Checking Instagram in the morning. Scrolling through Facebook on the bus. Working on your laptop throughout the day and watching Netflix on your iPad a night. We spend so much of our days looking at screens, but at what cost to our health? In our modern, screen-addicted society, blue light damage is something we should all be aware of.

In the last few years, more attention has been brought to the effects of blue light on our eyes. You’ve probably started to see blue light filtering glasses popping up on your Facebook feed. But, have you ever given any thought to what this blue light is doing to your skin?

Protecting your skin from the sun with sunscreen is (hopefully) a no-brainer. Now with our screen addictions, its time to go one step further.

According to a study by Unilever Skincare Research, four eight-hour workdays in front of a computer exposes the skin to the same amount of energy as 20 minutes in the mid-afternoon sun. With millennials reportedly checking their phone up to 150 times a day and clocking more than 10 hours of screen time daily, blue is shown to cause oxidative stress on the skin and create free radicals which threaten the integrity of collagen structures deep within the epidermis.

“Blue light silently assaults the skin,” says EXYRA founder, Raymond Seubelan. “Unlike UV rays which can trigger immediate erythema and edema, blue light initially goes unnoticed but can, over time, weaken our skin’s barrier function and accelerate photo-ageing.” Umm… NO THANKS! That’s not something we want to be a part of.

Skincare Products that help reduce blue light damage

While specialised glasses, like those from EXYRA, work wonders at protecting our eyes and the delicate skin around them, we need to start thinking about the rest of your face. It’s time to have a look at products that protect the skin on our face and décolletage.
